Materials and Tools I Used

I wanted my potting bench to be sturdy, weather-resistant, and long-lasting. After researching, I settled on using cedar wood because it’s naturally rot-resistant. However, pressure-treated pine is another budget-friendly option.

• Lumber – Cedar or pressure-treated wood (I used 2x4s and 1x6s)
• Galvanized Screws – These prevent rust over time.
• Wood Glue – For extra stability.
• Hooks – To hang gardening tools.
• Mesh Screen – Great for sifting soil (optional).
• Waterproof Sealant or Outdoor Wood Stain – Protects the wood from the elements.
• Hinges (Optional) – If you want a fold-down shelf or collapsible features.
• Casters (Optional) – For making your potting bench mobile.

Tools:

• Measuring Tape
• Circular Saw or Handsaw
• Drill and Screws
• Hammer
• Level
• Sandpaper
• Paintbrush (if applying sealant or stain)

Step-by-Step Guide to Building a Potting Bench

I designed my potting bench to be about 48 inches wide, 24 inches deep, and 60 inches tall. You can adjust these dimensions to fit your space.

Step 1: Cutting the Wood

I started by measuring and cutting all the pieces:

• (4) Legs – 36” long (2x4s)
• (4) Side Supports – 24” long (2x4s)
• (2) Front and Back Supports – 48” long (2x4s)
• (1) Work Surface – 48” x 24” (1×6 boards placed side by side)
• (2) Shelves – 48” x 12” (for storage)

Step 2: Assembling the Frame

• I attached the side supports to the legs using screws and wood glue.
• Then, I added the front and back supports, making sure the frame was square using a level.
• This created a sturdy base for the potting bench.

Step 3: Adding the Work Surface

• I laid the 1×6 boards across the top and secured them with screws.
• To allow for drainage, I left small gaps between each board.

Step 4: Installing the Shelves

• I added two lower shelves for storage, perfect for holding pots, soil bags, and watering cans.

Step 5: Adding Custom Features

To make my bench even more functional, I included:

• Hooks – For hanging tools like trowels and shears.
• Mesh Screen Section – This acts as a built-in soil sifter.
• Sink Cutout – If you have an old sink, you can integrate it for easy clean-up.
